Shifting Landscapes

by Rev. Nan Kaye-Skinner

Thirty years ago casinos came to the Black Hills of South Dakota and brought change to small towns like Lead, Deadwood and Spearfish. The 24-7 gaming industry changed the lifestyle of what had been quiet towns with summer tourists passing through.

Employment brought new people and a new culture to the community. It was a big shift, but it was also an opportunity.  For local churches, the opportunity was the chance to look at the way they had been loving and serving Christ and ask what shifts would expand their love and service to the people in this new 24-7 reality.

Sometimes a paradigm shift results in a change in practice.  One church added a Saturday night service, some joined an alliance to create quality day and night childcare. Sometimes a paradigm shift gives us new eyes to rethink our assumptions and gain a richer understanding of what it means to love and serve God and our neighbor.

The Disciples were on a perpetual paradigm shift with Jesus as he showed them the depth of God’s purpose and love that changed their lives forever.

What is God shifting in you?
